Hello there. It’s Monica Anne. You know, when I decided to become a professional writer, I thought it would be much easier. I thought all it took was a great story. “If you build it, they will come,” right? Well, the reality is that it takes a little bit more than that… …And if you’ve spent any time trying to make a living as a professional writer, you already know that when I say “a little,” I mean “A LOT.” It takes a certain kind of person to commit to writing, let alone actually publishing your work in progress. If you’re like me, you probably take for granted how many people don’t really have particularly strong or vibrant imaginations. That may seem strange to you if you feel like you trip over inspiration for something else that you can’t find the time to write (or the commitment to finish), but it’s true. As humans, we can’t resist the desire for more stories. We crave them. And we always need new ones because everything ends, just as others are beginning. Of course, we’ll need our new fix - our story fix! And there’s absolutely no reason why you can’t be one of the world-renowned storytellers providing it… and living exactly the kind of life you’ve always wanted for yourself and your loved ones in the process. Sure, it sounds great… but you’ve been at this for a while. It’s not like you started writing yesterday. You’ve tried. So what are you missing…? And what would it be like to finally find that one missing puzzle piece that makes all the other details you’ve spent so much time and energy on snap into place with purpose and clarity like you never thought possible? I’m professional writer for roughly 10 years, successfully publishing and writing on a cookbook series and a fantasy series, in addition to serving as the Director of Marketing for a business-to-business (B2B) company for three years, and reviewing and revising the work of other authors, and helping businesses market themselves online and build an audience. In that time, I’ve learned a lot of things the hard way… and I’ve made it my business to never stop learning more about writing, grammar, social media marketing, and coaching. But where I am today is nowhere close to where I was 10 years ago. Writing In the Real World You would think that graduating with an Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Public Relations and Marketing, I would have no problem getting people to pay attention to my writing. After all, you and I both know there are a LOT of authors. Any story even half-decent should be easy to market, right? Well… no. It’s not that simple. For one thing, with the explosion of e-books giving anyone and everyone the power to publish, there are a TON of books published every day… It was hard enough getting people to pay attention back in the days of a few big publishing houses that rolled out several books a year apiece. To add insult to injury, even though cell phones have made it easier than ever for people all around the world to read exactly the kind of books that most appeal to them… it seems like everything else on our cell phones gets more attention than our Kindle, iBook, or Scribd apps. The trend towards quick and easy entertainment that doesn’t require a lot of thought is on a second-by-second upswing… And, as if it wasn’t hard enough to overcome these facts of the modern literary life, the success of your fellow writers works against you. Writing may be your art, but it’s also a business. And it’s in the best interest of sites like Amazon to put their strongest push behind the Anne McCaffreys, J.K. Rowlings, and Ursula K. Le Guins of the world than it is on untested variables like new authors – no matter how good they may be… What Are You Supposed to Do? I don’t have to tell you there are too many tools, programs, and “get rich quick” schemes targeted to would-be authors to even begin to counting. If you’ve spent any time at all trying to figure out how to make your writing into your living, you’ve surely come across more than your share. Honestly, it can seem like there are more people coming up with things to sell authors than there are people coming up with ideas for books and – as I mentioned above – you can’t really blame them… You’re just one person with so much time in the day and more than just you’re writing to be responsible for… which can make even getting in the right frame of mind to finish your work daunting on your bad days. But if you never get finished, how can you even begin to compete with all the authors cranking out books right this very minute? You can’t reseal Pandora’s box… or convince people to live without their Pandora Radio. But you still have a desire deep within you to share your story with the readers who would appreciate it most… if only you could get their attention. And that gets harder and harder as attention spans become shorter and shorter. You’re a long way from fame, especially if you have yet to even publish your first book… and that counts against you in a numbers game where even online publishers know they can rely on established authors to pay their own bills… but what about yours? You know your writing is good, but “great” means nothing if no one ever reads it! Your Story Is Your Story… And You Can Change It When and How You Please As you may have guessed… I solved these problems for myself, with answers that have served me well for nearly a decade. You may think it seems like the odds are against you – and you’re correct… but we all know odds are meant to be defied. Every success story is a story of beating the odds. What were the odds against Thomas Edison inventing the light bulb? He answered that himself: “I haven’t failed. I just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” But one did. The solution worked. The solution is all you need to make the odds not matter. What’s the Twist? You probably already know you need impartial people to help improve your writing. The compliments you get from your mom or your best friend might make you feel good… but real critique makes your writing, and ultimately your books, better. All the best writers have at least one person – if not a group of people – they can count on to tell them what they need to hear whether they like it or not. Your support group, your feedback group, your friends, co-workers, relatives, and everyone else you come into contact with are all supporting characters in THE STORY OF YOU. In fact, you can make a case that all of our lives follow some variation of the Hero’s Journey. The Hero’s Journey, if you’re not familiar, is the story structure behind some of the best-known and most beloved and emulated stories ever written (or told – it dates back way before the written word). In the Hero’s Journey, the main character is called to an adventure. He or she makes a discovery or learn something about the world that he/she didn’t know or realize before… and suddenly an incredible opportunity opens up before him/her, beckoning him/her to take a chance. Now I know that sounds familiar. But the hero of the story always runs into a problem… Think about when Luke Skywalker made the bold decision to go with Obi-Wan Kenobi to rescue Princess Leia… that was his call to adventure. He met people like he’d never known before and had experiences he could only imagine before… but then he hit a wall. He wanted to be a Jedi… but “wanting to” is never enough to make anything happen. The leap from knowing you’re missing something to grasping what you need to grow and change into who you were meant to be …takes action… Unfortunately, you can’t get there from here. You can’t do it alone. No one can. No one does. Which leads us to the next step on the Hero’s Journey… Meeting a Mentor. Change Your Story with Coaching My business is changing stories – as an editor and as a coach. It’s a cliché to say, “I’ve done it the hard way, so you don’t have to,” but the fact of the matter is that I don’t want you to have to deal with dashed hopes, ugly crying, and defeated anger that come with trying to make it on your own as a working, published writer. If you’ve made it this far in your writing career and you’re committed to making this happen, you already have everything you need to prove that you’re one of the strong. You absolutely can be successful with your writing. I’ve done it and so can you. It starts by… Winning the uphill battle by taking yourself out of it… Stop trying to compete with the constant barrage of people all over the world cranking out junk books to further their business or just build a name for themselves without trying to serve their readers, and learn how to create your ideal audience – the people who are wishing and hoping and waiting that someone who tells exactly the kind of stories you do will offer them the kind of stories they love! Keeping in mind that people will be completely dedicated and devoted to you and your writing because you will be marketing to those that enjoy what you write, you say, your values, and your voice. If you can create a branded platform to provide to your audience, you really can set yourself apart from all the noise and clutter demanding people’s attention and make them come to you with their undivided attention! Crafting a real brand with expectations only you can deliver on because only you have your unique perspective, style, and voice. Fame is relative and if you know who you are you don’t have to stand out from a crowd because you’re a crowd of one! Choosing the right words and the right direction for your story is something that you must decide. However, a coach and an editor can help guide you in the direction that’ll be perfect for your story and make suggestions based on your writing goals and the needs of the WIP. Once you have your story written, it’s important to have a plan of how you are going to publish, your marketing plan, how you want your book to look, what mediums your book will be published on, and how much it will cost among other things. You can do all of these things yourself, or you can utilize the help of a coach to ease the process. The Success You Want at a Price You Can Live With
